After breakfast, Madaba “the City of Mosaics” is one of the cities that reflects the Byzantine period in Jordan very well and is one of the most memorable places in the Holy Land. The town embraces the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George where the 6th century Byzantine Mosaic Map showing Jerusalem and many other holy sites. This masterpiece is unrivalled in Jordan, but there are literally dozens of other mosaics from the 5th through the 7th centuries, scattered throughout the churches and homes of Madaba. A short driver to Mount Nebo an elevated ridge at approximately 817 meters (2680 feet) above sea level. The view from the summit provides a panorama of the Holy Land and, to the north, a more limited one of the valley of the River Jordan. The West Bank city of Jericho is usually visible from the summit, as well as Jerusalem on a very clear day. Drive to Mackawer (Machaerus) , a fortified hilltop palace located (24 km) southeast of the mouth of the Jordan River on the eastern side of the Dead Sea. It is the alleged location of the imprisonment and execution of John the Baptist. In 30 BC Mukawer used as a military base to safeguard Herod the Great territories east of the Jordan Upon the death of Herod the Great, the fortress was passed to his son, Herod Antipas, who ruled from 4 BC until 39 AD. It was during this time, at the beginning of the first century AD, that John the Baptist was imprisoned and beheaded at Machaerus. Continue to Um Alrasas, Living place of  St. Stephan , an archeological site in Jordan which contains ruins from the Nabataeans, Roman, Byzantine, and early Muslim civilizations. The majority of the site has not been excavated. Among the portions excavated so far include a military camp, and several churches. For its unique blend of civilizations, Um er-Rasas was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The most important discovery on the site was the mosaic floor of the Church of St Stephen It was made in 785 (discovered after 1986). The perfectly preserved mosaic floor is the largest one in Jordan. On the central panel hunting and fishing scenes are depicted while another panel illustrates the most important cities of the region (including Kastron Mefaa, Philadelphia, Madaba, Esbounta, Belemounta, Areopolis, Charac Moaba, Jerusalem,  Nablus, Caesarea and Gaza). The frame of the mosaic is especially decorative. Six mosaic masters signed the work: Staurachios from Esbus, Euremios, Elias, Constantinus, Germanus and Abdela. It overlays another, damaged, mosaic floor of the earlier (587) “Church of Bishop Sergius.” Another four churches were excavated nearby with traces of mosaic decoration.,Return to Amman for overnight at Hotel

After breakfast Early departure to Petra and start Petra visit. Today you will enjoy the visit of one of the new world wonders, the lost city of Petra. Petra: the eighth wonder of the ancient world, it is without doubt Jordan’s most valuable treasure and the greatest tourist attraction. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataens, an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago, turning it into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria Greece and Rome. Petra has been featured in Hollywood blockbusters such as “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and ” The Mummy Returns”. After passing tombs outside the city, you come to the “Siq”, an immense crack in the Nubian sandstone almost 1200 meters long.  This winding fissure separates overhanging cliffs that appear to meet 100 meter overhead.  Near the end of the passage, the Siq makes one last turn with great style, and out of the gloom Petra’s most impressive monument Al Khazneh (The Treasury) appears in the towering brightness.  One of the most elegant remains of antiquity, Al Khazneh is nearly 43 meter high and was carved from the mountain’s solid rock in the First Century B.C. originally used as a Nabataean king’s tomb; scholars believe Al Khazneh was later used as Nabataean temple. Beyond Al Khazneh you are surrounded on both sides by hundreds of Petra’s curved and built structures, soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a curved Nabataean theater (seating 3,000), large and small houses, burial chambers, banquet halls, water channels and reservoirs, bathes, monumental staircases, cultic installations, markets, arched gates public buildings and paved streets.
